MODULE SYNOPSES

Students will acquire skills to identify and assess the different types of crisis such as suicide intervention and counselling dangerous clients. This module trains the students to employ the different intervention methods when counselling a person in a crisis situation.
 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This module introduces students to the exciting counselling aspect that is Crisis Intervention. We are exposed to the role of “Crisis Intervener” more often than we imagine during the course of daily living. But here we shall take a closer look at the issue from a professional counsellor’s perspective. The question we want to answer is: “How can you be an effective helper when dealing with individuals who have just experienced a major trauma in their lives?”
 
The module seeks to introduce the student to the psychological impact of trauma and its implications for health, educational and welfare professionals. It also seeks to familiarise students with the range of skills and intervention strategies employed in trauma and crisis management.
 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
 
Describe the impact and implications of trauma and crisis on clients;
Critically evaluate current intervention approaches to the management of crisis and trauma;
Identify the range of settings and circumstances where crisis, trauma intervention and counselling skills may be required
Demonstrate competency in crisis intervention skills.
 

COURSE METHODOLOGY

The nature of the course assumes strong classroom participation as key points will be delivered in power point presentations and practical sessions. Various class practices will be employed to deepen the student’s understanding on self and the dynamics of the Crisis Intervention process.

Simon Neo, MSocSc (Vice President, Psychotherapist Association of Singapore Psychotherapist, Singapore & Bangkok)
 
Simon is a Professional with 18 years expertise in counselling, social and human services, education, services and training as well as community outreach. Proactively develop, projects, programs and other disciplines to enhance the social, educational, psychological and other characteristics of students, parents, educators, social workers and the general public.
 
Simon is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Group Psychotherapy and is expected to complete in 2016. He has a master's degree in Social Science (Counselling) with University of South Australia.
 
His portfolio includes a private practice known as The Psychotherapy Clinic at Novena Medical Centre , as well as in Bangkok, Thailand, where he work as a Psychotherapist. He has taught as an adjunct lecturer with various institutions including Ngee Ann Poly, Singapore Poly and other private schools both local and overseas. He often provide training and workshop at the prestigious Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.
